Recipe Storage App: Where Saved Recipes Should Actually Live

A recipe storage app is only worth having if what it stores is usable later. Storing a link to a cooking video is storage in name only, because the recipe is still inside the video. Yumzi reads the recipe out of the cooking videos you save on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, and from recipe websites too, and stores it as ingredients with amounts and steps.

What is wrong with how recipes get stored now?

Most people already have a storage system. It is the saved folder, the screenshot, and the link pasted into a chat with themselves. It fails at the same point every time: retrieval.

A saved post cannot be searched by ingredient. A screenshot is an image. A link goes to a page that may change or disappear. None of them tells you, at half past six, how much gochujang the dish needed.

Storage that cannot answer that question is a bookmark pile with better branding.

Most apps store the pointer because that is what their import route gives them. Samsung Food’s documented routes are a recipe URL, the Chrome extension, the mobile Share Extension, Recipe Builder for typing one in, and a camera scan of a printed or handwritten recipe; each stores whatever text it was handed.

What does Yumzi store instead?

Text. Ingredients with amounts, steps in order, and the creator credited. That comes from reading the video’s spoken track and the text on screen, or from a recipe website read directly.

Because the stored thing is text, it can be searched, scaled to a different number of people, planned into a week, and merged with other recipes into a single shopping list.

Does the recipe survive if the original post is deleted?

Yes. Once read, the recipe is stored as your own text rather than as a pointer to someone else’s post, so a video that gets taken down does not take your dinner with it. The creator stays credited on the recipe.

What are the honest limits?

Yumzi never invents a recipe. If a clip carries no spoken amounts and no on-screen text, you get told it could not be read rather than a guess.

A reading it is unsure about is flagged for you to check rather than presented as fact.

Yumzi is free while it is in early access. Reading a recipe out of a video is the part that costs money to run, so a paid tier for heavy use is planned. Storing and using recipes you already have stays free.

The Albert Heijn basket step is the Netherlands only, though the app runs in 175 countries.

Who should use something else?

If you want a general-purpose note store that happens to hold recipes, a notes app is free and fine. Yumzi is for the case where the recipes worth storing are trapped in video and would otherwise never become text at all.
